Dido Brother

You know, it is funny in life how some minds tend to think alike. Some even say that great minds think alike, but I won't go so far as to take upon myself this characteristic. I cannot help but agree with all of what JP has commented on this week in regards to the class.

As far as the material that was presented and discussed I already had a pretty clear understanding, particularly on the topic of creating PDF's. I personally thought that the time taken during week one's class to explain PDF's was sufficient enough for anyone to understand the PDF process, but apparently I was wrong.

I am also curious to know more about this new concept that was brought up regarding sentences and paragraphs. The old adage that the end of a paragraph is the end of a specific idea is what I've been taught and grown accustomed to, but now it seems that there is a whole new world of possibility with this concept of each sentence being the end of a specific idea.

Throughout my educational career, mainly high school, I have always struggled with the principles of grammar, particularly memorization and knowing all the details. Having been out of high school for 5 years and coming to understand and appreciate life more I now have a whole new outlook on things and find myself with a desire to learn and succeed. So, it has been a real delight to be back in the classroom atmosphere learning new things. Having this new desire makes all the difference and I find myself retaining more information than I could of ever imagined in high school. Even with the brief discussion in class regarding a few grammar principles I already find myself thinking differently when I write, so already, this college experience is proving worthwhile.

Both JP and I have been heavily involved with answering questions and being of support to other students in need, so in my mind there is no question that we are participating. In this weeks class I reiterated to our fellow students that we volunteered to be the class’s tech support for a reason and hope that each student will take advantage of the resource.

I completely agree with JP, who strongly emphasized the need to use all the resources available to us outside of class time such as; WebCT, e-mail, and direct contact with Marc during office hours. This will greatly improve the level of learning in the classroom and our ability to succeed, along with reducing the amount of confusion throughout the class which tends to occur when too many questions are asked. I think JP said it perfectly, "We pay good money to learn and taking time out of class for questions that could be easily answered on webct takes away from our education."

Until next week,

Day Two and time flew

What I already knew about this week’s Com material?

This week's class was good for many people to know how to convert files to PDFs over the internet. Being a Techy, this was not new to me. We didn't go over much in class except for grammar and web-based PDFs.

If you don't know how to use the software, instead of spending three hours fighting with it, ask one of the techs for help.

What I still wonder about this week’s Com material?

All through high school I was told that the end of a paragraph was the end of a complete idea. Being told now that the end of a sentence is the same thing makes sence to me. What I still wonder is why can't the sentence after be part of the same idea?

What I learned this week?

Grammar is not my strong area when it comes to writing and I learnt what types of grammar I'll be needing to work on which will help me in this class. Other than the grammar, not much was talked about in class so not much was learnt. Once we get past the basics I'll have more to write.

How I participated?

A few people were having issues with their computers so I helped to fix their problem. I also responded to questions on the webct durring class so that more questions would not have to be asked in class.

I know questions are important to ask because we can't continue working without knowing what to do. I would like to ask though that If you have questions about your computer or the class and you think your classmates can answer, please post them on webct. The questions asked in class about not knowing how to use or navigate webct should be asked through office hours, webct, or e-mail.

We pay good money to learn and taking time out of class for questions that could be easily answered on webct takes away from our education.

Just my opinion.

Penny Pinching And Donating For A Cause

"Find a penny, Pick it up, the rest of the day you'll have good luck."

If that is true then why haven't I won the lottery? Maybe because I don't spend my money on buying tickets. But what I do though, is picking up every penny I see on the floor.

People ask why I would waste my time with a penny.
Well.... "They add up" and the more I get the richer I become. (Ok, so only by a penny. But thats one penny more than I had before.

Now you might be wondering why I'm talking about a penny?
BECAUSE I"M CRAZY!

No... Heh. Its because I'd like to try something out. I've seen it done before, I hear about it all the time. But I'd like to see if it works.

I would like to ask from all you reading this to send me a penny. One little penny. You probably have one in your sofa or bed. Maybe one on your desk or floor. Pick up that penny and do me a favor. Send it to me and I'll keep you up to date on this blogger how many pennies I've recieved.

Send me a Penny in the mail to:

Bio Diesel A Future Fill UP

COME ONE COME ALL! The fuel of the future! WOW.

Can you imagine? Cutting down the cost of filling up and at the same time saving the environment. Incredible. Maybe we will save our little planet. Maybe not. Who knows?

Well If we don't save the planet, we can all burn to a crisp by micro-waves that will come through our ozone thanks to green house gasses. YAY

In reply to Steve (YAY)

Unlike Steve, this is my first year out of high school and I’m still a newbie when it comes to English. My vocabulary is not as vast as others but I can at least try. I found that I’ll be working on my communication skills while I am in this class because most of our work will be done with partners.
Many of the points that were gone over in class I understand. Changing formats of word documents to PDF format is easy for me. To come to a point, computers are not new to me and I can help anyone who needs it.

The material for this week was not very confusing to me but I still have a problem… For some reason my WebCT is not active and the school is currently trying to resolve that problem. But until this is fixed I do not have any way to get to the course online.

Like Steve, I also am a techy geek but what I found out this class was how to use a new program to make PDF’s from using the Print option of Microsoft Word. This makes the creation of PDF’s a lot easier.

Steve and I are both going to be online tutors and he is already aiding classmates.
Until I get WebCT I will have to wait before I can help others also.

Week1blogEntry

This week was quite a change for me as I have been out of high school for 5 years now and find myself making a lot of adjustments to my personal schedule in order to create sufficient study time.

What I already knew about this week’s Com material?

Being a mature student, with perhaps more years of experience than the majority of the student body at OC, I have a clear understanding of the expectations there are for us to be respectable individuals towards our fellowmen.

What I still wonder about this week’s Com material?

The only thing that I’m still wondering about in regards to the week’s lesson material is exactly how each week is going to play out and how it will affect my personal life.

What I learned this week?

Even though I may be a self professed, “techy geek,” I have never learned about macro’s and their connection to word documents and viruses. I found that the introduction to double-entry journals renewed for me the importance of keeping a journal, but also enlightened my understanding in that it is another great source of learning. I guess I never envisioned my college experience as being one where the majority of the learning came from fellow students.

How I participated?

Both JP and I responded to the call to be online tutors who would be willing to help fellow classmates through the technical aspects of the course, so already I’ve found myself answering questions in order to keep everyone up to speed. I hope to continue to be of help to anyone in need and encourage all students not to be afraid to ask questions. As Marc said in class, “There are no stupid questions.”
